Do you find yourself reaching for that cup of coffee right after lunch or in need of an afternoon pick-me-up? Many of us experience a noticeable dip in energy during the afternoon, which often impacts our productivity, especially after lunch. If you find yourself struggling to stay focused and alert as the day progresses, you're certainly not alone. We will delve deeper into the science behind the mid-afternoon energy drop, explore why it happens, and uncover some top tips to beat the post-lunch slump and boost your productivity. Let's dive in!

Why does my energy dip in the afternoon?

Experiencing a dip in energy during the afternoon is a common phenomenon and can be due to several factors related to our biology and lifestyle.

low energy and sleepy

Circadian Rhythm

Our circadian rhythm, also known as our body’s internal clock, changes our body’s physiological processes in response to environmental cues including temperature, light, exercise, and food consumption. This rhythm can cause our alertness levels to rise and dip throughout the day. Significant dips are commonly observed at night but also in the afternoon between 2-4 pm.

The Impact of Caffeine

For many of us, having a cup of coffee or tea is how we often start our day. It's no surprise that we often look to caffeine to give us that almost instant energy boost to perk us up for the day.

Caffeine, found in coffee and many variations of tea, can inhibit neurotransmitters, which are special chemicals in our brain that help send messages between nerve cells. In particular, it impacts neurotransmitters adenosine and GABA, which are responsible for making us feel relaxed and sleepy. As a result, having caffeine leaves you feeling wired and energised.

As caffeine is absorbed quickly, it can cause a large spike in energy levels. However, this is often followed by an equally fast crash. As a result, you’re often left feeling more tired than you were before the coffee. Reaching for another coffee can perpetuating the cycle.

The After-Lunch Slump

Do you notice the slump happening after lunch? Studies have shown that after a meal, particularly larger ones, our body redirects blood flow to our digestive tracts to aid digestion and absorption. This can lead to a decrease in blood flow to other parts of the body such as our brain or muscles, leaving us feeling tired or sluggish.

The Role of Diet

Consuming foods high in simple carbohydrates, such as sugar and refined carbohydrates like white bread and pastries, can cause the body to produce insulin rapidly in response to the rise in glucose in the blood. While our body undergoes this process to ensure that the glucose levels in our blood remain consistent, the sudden decrease in blood glucose levels could result in a drastic drop in energy levels. This makes it difficult for us to concentrate, thus leading to the afternoon slump we experience.

How to beat the 3pm slump?

Struggling with the mid-afternoon slump? Here are four effective tips to boost your energy and productivity during those sluggish hours.

1. Plan Your Meals & Snacks

A well-thought-out approach to meal planning can be your first port of call to managing an afternoon slump.

planning and preparing your meal

  • Opt for complex carbohydrates like quinoa, whole grains, and sweet potatoes to help stabilise blood sugar levels.

  • Increase fibre intake from foods like beans, lentils, and legumes to enhance satiety and slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and sugars into the bloodstream.

  • Balance your meals with sufficient protein and healthy fats to sustain energy levels throughout the day.

  • Prioritise snack options that are lower in sugar and carbohydrates while being rich in protein or fibre — try greek yogurt, trail mix, vegetables with hummus, fruit, or even dark chocolate.

2. Stay Hydrated

Water is essential, constituting about 60% of our body weight and facilitating nutrient transportation and temperature regulation. Dehydration can disrupt or delay these vital processes, leading to feelings of sluggishness, tiredness, and reduced alertness.

It is recommended to consume 6-8 glasses of fluid a day. Remember that foods like soups, curries, fruits, and vegetables also contain water and contribute to daily fluid intake. Individual water needs can vary based on factors like physical activity and environmental conditions.

3. Reduce Caffeine Intake

While drinks such as coffee, tea, and energy drinks contain caffeine, we may overlook caffeine content in foods such as chocolate, snacks, energy bars, and products with coffee or mocha flavouring. Seek out alternatives with lower caffeine content, such as decaffeinated coffee, matcha, or green tea. Being conscious of our food choices can help minimise the effects of a caffeine crash and regulate our energy levels throughout the day.

4. Get Moving

Sedentary lifestyles and prolonged sitting at our desks can reduce heart rate and impede blood flow, leading to increased fatigue. Studies have demonstrated that incorporating occasional breaks, stretches, or light-intensity walking into your daily routine can diminish fatigue levels and improve alertness. Incorporating standing while working has shown similar effects on fatigue and concentration levels. Taking a walk, stretching, or standing occasionally throughout the workday can leave us feeling more energised.

Conclusion

It's important to note that experiencing some level of fatigue in the afternoon can be normal. Everyone is unique, and different factors may be at play when it comes to managing alertness and energy levels throughout the day. However, if you find that you consistently have extremely low energy levels or if it significantly affects your daily functioning, it may be a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Don't let the afternoon slump slow you down! Try incorporating these tips into your daily routine and see the difference they make in your energy and productivity.
